This Sunday is Father's Day, and we're excited to be highlighting ways that men can incorporate essential oils into their daily routines. If our natural beard oil and beard balm recipes weren't for you because you prefer a clean shave, then fear not: the below aftershave recipes are for you.
Aftershaves are an important component of shaving for their astringent properties; they help remove any bacteria introduced while the pores were open during shaving as well as seal up the pores so no additional dirt can intrude. This can lead to less flare ups if you're prone to redness or irritation and smooth, even skin. Read below to see how we incorporate Paradise Springs Essential Oils into a refreshing minty aftershave and a calming, skin soothing aftershave.
Calming Aloe Aftershave
If you have sensitive skin, this aloe vera-based aftershave is for you. The aloe vera juice soothes and calms irritated skin, while lavender oil adds antiseptic properties to the mixture. Orange essential oil helps improve blood flow to the skin while clearing clogged pores, and almond oil is rich in vitamin E to help keep skin supple.
What You'll Need:
- ¼ cup fresh aloe vera juice (not gel)
- 2 Tbsp Paradise Springs Jojoba Oil
- 3 Tbsp distilled water
- 5 drops Paradise Springs Organic Lavender Oil
- 5 drops Paradise Springs Organic Sweet Orange Essential Oil
- Glass jar for storing
To Make: Pour all ingredients into a clean glass bottle (we prefer dark amber bottles to protect the mixture from sunlight). Store at room temperature in a cool, dark place.
To Use: After shaving, splash face with cold water and pat dry. Pour a small amount of aftershave into palm (we like to start with a few drops), pat palms together and hold palms open for a few seconds before applying to face so the aloe isn't overly astringent. Apply to face in a downward motion, from top of cheeks to jawline. Do not rinse.
Refreshing Peppermint Aftershave
If you're looking for a revitalizing aftershave, try this refreshing peppermint recipe. Peppermint leaves a cool sensation on irritated skin while tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil act as anti-bacterials to protect open pores. We add witch hazel for its astringent properties to help tone skin and close pores, as well as a bit of coconut oil to moisturize.
What You'll Need:
3-5 drops Paradise Springs Peppermint Oil
3 drops Paradise Springs Organic Eucalyptus Oil
3 drops Paradise Springs Organic Tea Tree Oil
1 Tbsp witch hazel
¼ cup Nature's Lab Organic Coconut Oil
¼ cup distilled water
To Make: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the coconut oil. Add the witch hazel and mix until incorporated. Dilute with water, stirring consistently. Add the essential oils (make sure your mixture isn't too hot as to not burn the oils) and blend well. Store mixture in a clean glass jar.
To Use: After shaving, splash face with cold water and pat dry. Pour a small amount of aftershave into palm (we like to start with a few drops), pat palms together and hold palms open for a few seconds before applying to face so the witch hazel isn't overly astringent. Apply to face in a downward motion, from top of cheeks to jawline. Do not rinse.
