DIY Brightening Turmeric Butter
Turmeric
Turmeric is a bright yellow herb that has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional medicinal system based on balance, nutrition and natural wellness remedies. Turmeric contains plant compounds, notably curcuminoids, that have been studied for a variety of health benefits, including inflammatory health and skin health, among many others.* Though turmeric can be taken in supplement form (click here to shop turmeric products from Nature's Lab), this recipe incorporates turmeric powder to give skin a soft, subtle glow while calming skin to fight inflammation and calm irritation.*
Lemon Essential Oil
We pair Ayurvedic turmeric with Paradise Springs Organic Lemon Oil for both aromatherapy and therapeutic benefits (if you have access to Turmeric Oil, feel free to incorporate a few drops into the recipe for even more brightening and calming effects). In addition to brightening skin, Lemon Oil is astringent and detoxifying, meaning it'll help tighten pores and clear skin. It's naturally antiseptic, too, making it a great cleansing addition.
What You'll Need
- 3 ounces (6 Tbps) shea butter
- 1 tsp organic turmeric powder
- 8 drops Paradise Springs Organic Lemon Oil
- Optional: 2-3 drops turmeric oil
- Heat-safe bowl
- Jars for storing
To Make
Melt the shea butter in a heat-safe bowl using a double boiler method. To do this, fill a pan with a few inches of water and bring to a boil. Place the heat-safe bowl with shea butter on top of boiling water until melted.
Let the melted shea butter cool down for few minutes in the refrigerator (approximately 5-10 minutes).
Remove the shea butter and whip it using a blender or a hand mixer. Add the turmeric powder and Paradise Springs Organic Lemon Oil and whip again until the mixture becomes fluffy.
Use & Storage
Apply a small amount of this brightening butter after cleansing. Apply to face and body as needed, massaging into skin until absorbed. Store in a cool, dry place at room temperature in an air-tight jar.
